At Calabogie Peaks Resort, we’re committed to delivering the best possible experience for our guests, and last year, we took significant steps to improve the mountain terrain by focusing on upgrading two key trails: Finnegan and Whistlin Paddy. These improvements are designed to enhance the quality and safety of your time on the slopes.
On January 3, 2023, a fire was sparked and tore through the snowmaking pumphouse at Calabogie Peaks Resort, resulting in the complete loss of the building, pumps, and electrical distribution systems. The impact was significant, jeopardizing snowmaking capabilities, ski operations, and the overall experience for visitors – as approximately 50% of the terrain had completed snowmaking and the power to the Lakeview chairlift was cut. A temporary pump system and building were quickly constructed with invaluable support from our employees, township, ski community, partners, and stakeholders, and industry contacts. This saved the 2022-2023 winter season.
Last summer, the resort replaced the temporary pump with a more powerful system, capable of delivering 2000 gallons per minute, up from 1700 gallons per minute. Additionally, the new pumps come with an additional 100 psi of pressure and automated sensors resulting in superior and consistent snow quality on the upper mountain. This not only means more snow but also faster and smarter snowmaking, ensuring that the slopes are ready for action sooner.
Rock Blasting and Trail Grading: Smoother, Safer Rides
To improve these trails, rock was blasted and graded to remove obstacles and level out the terrain. This means that when you ski or snowboard down Finnegan and Whistlin Paddy, you’ll experience a smoother, more consistent ride. By eliminating uneven surfaces and potential hazards, we’ve made these trails more enjoyable for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders.
Better Snow Retention and Quality
These terrain improvements also contribute to better snow retention and quality. With the newly graded slopes, our snowmaking efforts will be more effective, ensuring that snow coverage is more consistent across the entire trail. This means fewer icy patches and better overall conditions throughout the season, allowing guests to enjoy the trails at their best.
A Focus on Guest Experience
Ultimately, these upgrades are part of our ongoing effort to improve the overall guest experience at Calabogie Peaks Resort. We understand that the quality of our trails directly impacts your enjoyment, and we’re committed to making continuous improvements that enhance your time on the mountain.
This season, you can look forward to smoother descents, better snow conditions, and an overall improved skiing and snowboarding experience on Finnegan and Whistlin Paddy. We can’t wait for you to see—and feel—the difference.
